Anime Review- Fruits Basket: Prelude

fruits basket anime

Fruits Basket: Prelude is a touching prequel to the Fruits Basket series, focusing on the love story of Tohru Honda’s parents, Kyoko and Katsuya. If you’ve watched Fruits Basket, this movie gives a deeper look into Tohru’s family and the hardships her parents faced. Even if you haven’t seen the series, Prelude can stand alone as a beautiful story about love, healing, and finding hope.

As a fan of Fruits Basket, I found Prelude to be a very emotional and meaningful movie. I really enjoyed learning more about Kyoko’s past and seeing her as more than just Tohru’s mother. Her story shows that even people who make mistakes or feel lost can grow and change through love.

One thing I liked the most was how real the relationship between Kyoko and Katsuya felt. Their love wasn’t perfect, but they supported each other through difficult times. This made the movie feel more human and relatable.

However, I did feel the movie’s pace was a little slow at times, especially for viewers who may not be as familiar with the characters. But for fans of the series, it adds a lot of emotional depth and helps explain why Tohru is the way she is.

Story Overview

The movie follows Kyoko, a teenager who struggles with her emotions and feels alone. She rebels against her family and others, but everything changes when she meets Katsuya, a kind man who accepts her for who she is. As their relationship grows, we see how they help each other through tough times and form a strong bond. Their love is what shapes Tohru’s values and her positive attitude towards life.

What makes Prelude special is how it mixes sad and happy moments in a way that feels real. Kyoko’s journey from being a lost teenager to becoming a loving mother is truly moving. Her relationship with Katsuya feels natural and deep. While the main Fruits Basket series focuses on Tohru’s life with the Sohma family, Prelude lets us understand where Tohru gets her strength and kindness.

Animation and Music

The animation is beautiful, just like the 2019 Fruits Basket reboot. The characters’ emotions are shown clearly, and the colors give a warm feeling, even when the story is sad.

The music also plays a big part in making the story emotional. Soft piano tunes during quiet moments and stronger music during dramatic scenes help bring the emotions to life. The soundtrack helps tell the story and makes you feel more connected to the characters.

Rating: 8.5/10

Although the movie can feel slow at times, its emotional story and stunning animation make it a great watch for anyone who enjoys touching and heartfelt stories.
