Plot Summary

The story begins with a young girl named Hotaru, who gets lost in a magical forest filled with spirits and strange creatures. She meets Gin, a mysterious spirit who looks like a human but wears a mask. Gin tells Hotaru that if a human touches him, he will disappear forever. Despite this, they become close friends, and Hotaru visits Gin every summer.

As the years go by, Hotaru grows up, but Gin stays the same. Their friendship slowly turns into a sweet romance, but they both know that they can never truly be together. When Hotaru is in high school, Gin takes her to a festival in the forest. Sadly, their time together ends when Gin accidentally touches a human boy at the festival. As Gin starts to disappear, he and Hotaru finally hug and tell each other how they feel. The movie ends with Hotaru accepting her sadness and moving on with her life, always remembering the time she spent with Gin.

What makes this film special is how it talks about love that is both sweet and sad. Hotaru and Gin care about each other deeply, but they know they can’t really be together. This makes their time together feel even more precious. The ending is sad, but it is also beautiful, showing that even though they lost each other, the love they shared was real.

There is also a short story called Hotarubi no Mori e Tokubetsuhen that tells part of the story from Gin’s point of view. This gives us more insight into Gin’s character and how he feels about Hotaru. It adds a new layer to the story, making it even more emotional.
