History
The Forest Spirit is the guardian of the Cedar Forest and has the power to give life and take it away. Early in the film, it heals the main character, Ashitaka, but does not remove his curse. Later, it peacefully ends the lives of the boar god Okkoto and the wolf goddess Moro.
Lady Eboshi, one of the human characters, tries to kill the Forest Spirit. She shoots it while it is changing into the Night-Walker, causing chaos as its body drains life from everything around it. The destruction stops only when Ashitaka and San return the spirit’s head.
Abilities
The Forest Spirit has many special powers:

- Walking on Water: The Forest Spirit and its Night-Walker form can walk on water without sinking.
Mythology
The Forest Spirit is based on Japanese myths. It is similar to Yatsukamizuomitsuno, a god worshipped in Nagahama, Shiga, often shown as a deer with a tree on its head. The Night-Walker resembles Daidarabotchi, a giant from Japanese folklore who shapes the land. In the movie, both forms of the Forest Spirit represent the forest itself, being neither completely good nor evil.
