Qual is the Elder Sage of Corruption, was a powerful Demon in the service of the Demon King, striking fear into the hearts of many during the king’s rule. His reign of terror spread throughout the lands near the Größe Forest, where he committed unspeakable acts. Qual’s most notorious creation was the Killing Magic, also called Zoltraak, the very first spell capable of penetrating all of humanity’s magical defenses at that time.
Past Story
When the Demon King ruled, he wrecked havoc in the Größe Forest. He was so strong that he killed 40% of adventurers and 70% of sorcerers there. His power came from his special magic Zoltraak. This magic could go through any protection people had. During the adventure to kill the Demon King, Qual fought the Hero Party. He was too powerful for them, so Frieren had to seal him away as a last-ditch effort.
After Qual got sealed, sorcerers studied his Killing Magic. They figured out how to defend against it, thanks to Frieren’s help. This led to the creation of modern magic for humans. Zoltraak became regular attack magic, and its defense became common defense magic. Frieren kept Qual sealed for eighty years, with Himmel checking on him once a year to make sure the seal was still good.

Even the Hero’s party couldn’t beat him, so Frieren had to seal him away until she could become strong enough to defeat him later. It took humanity eighty years to figure out how to fight back against Qual’s magic.
Qual was really smart and could quickly understand how magic worked. He was able to figure out how a defensive spell made to stop his magic worked, realizing it needed a lot of mana to work. He could then make a plan to get around it.
Qual had a special magic spell called Zoltraak, which could pierce through any defense or magic resistance that humans had at the time. After Qual was sealed away, other sorcerers studied his magic and used it to create the modern magic system that we have today.
