Fern is an important character in the series and a powerful human mage. People love her because of her strong determination, emotional maturity, and a hint of youthful charm. She is a member of Frieren’s party group and, by the end of the first season of the anime, she becomes a First-Class mage.
History
Fern is an Orphan child whose family died in a war. Heiter adopted her named Fern and raised her. When Frieren visited him 20 years after Himmel’s death, Heiter asked her to take care of Fern after his death and train her as her apprentice. He was like a caring father to Fern, ensuring she became strong so he wouldn’t worry about her anymore. Fern still misses him dearly and remembers his wish for her to be strong so he could pass away without regrets.
After Heiter’s death, Frieren took Fern under her care. At first, Frieren, who had limited experience with humans, found it hard to connect with Fern. But as they traveled together, Frieren grew to deeply care for her apprentice. While Fern sees Frieren as an older sister, Frieren feels more like a mother to her. Despite this difference in perspective, they both care deeply for each other and share a strong bond. When asked why she continues to study magic, even though she doesn’t seem passionate about it, Fern says it’s because seeing Frieren happy makes her happy too.

Fern is skilled at hiding her mana, just like Frieren. She learned this skill when she was young. Because of this, she can sneak up on people and even demons without them noticing. She surprised the powerful demon Lügner and approached Wirbel, a strong mage, without him sensing her. Even Frieren admits it’s hard to find Fern when she hides her mana. Some say Fern is even better than Frieren because she can move while hiding her mana, while Frieren has to stay still.
Fern is also good at detecting mana. She was able to tell that Serie’s mana was unstable, which even Lernen, a very experienced mage, couldn’t do. This impressed Serie so much that she asked Fern to be her apprentice right away.
Another strength of Fern’s is her fast magic casting. She might not be as skilled as Frieren in terms of techniques and mana, but she can cast spells very quickly. According to Frieren, fights with Fern end faster. When Fern fought against Lügner, she could cast many Zoltraak spells one after another quickly, countering and overwhelming his attacks.
As for her spells, Fern mainly uses an offensive magic called Zoltraak. She practiced this spell since she was young and can cast it very quickly. She also has a special spell given to her by Serie, which cleans and freshens any clothing she uses it on.
